Doesn’t everyone search for that song that makes you feel like you are on a desolate island far away dancing at a beach rave and the only thing you need is music and the sound of the waves lightly crashing against the insoluble rocks? I didn’t need to, it found me, and I remember everything that counted for that moment. It was a smoldering English summer’s afternoon and I had the radio on full blast, a passenger cruising down the road to buy something ‘snazzy’, shall we say, for a little get together. I had the garms in mind, hoping to find an exact replica, and if not, something better. I was a girl on a mission, soon to be fishing for the prize and losing was not an option. I lay back, harmlessly humming staring at the rather bland view ahead. A few musical commodities had hit the deck, but nothing to compensate for what was coming – a bombshell of shattering sound that would blow me away after the first few words. The DJ spoke and introduced a new song, a name that didn’t spring to mind. The melody began and I had an urge to pipe up the volume (if that was even possible).I began to listen attentively, not allowing a split note to slip through my sound waves. The chorus hit and I noticed my eyes closing and my head slowly but surely wavering side to side. A blurred few words broke though, I could hardly make out what they were saying, but I liked it. It made me feel at one, calm, serene, almost magical. I felt like I could do anything, I felt like I could fly and not fall. I felt like I could love and not lose. I felt like I could forever be me and always win. Nothing could stop this feeling, until ….the DJ spoke again. ‘And that was ‘Sweet Disposition’ by the Temper trap’. The song was over. But the memory wasn’t.
This is a song I never lose touch with, because it introduced me to a mixture of emotions that I never realized existed within me. It also created a voice that occasionally speaks: love, dream, laugh, kiss and cry…like no one’s watching you.
